Motivational Interviewing Training

Help people find their own reasons to change.

Motivational Interviewing (MI) is one of the most effective ways to talk with people about change. Ted Izydor is a member of the Motivational Interviewing Network of Trainers (MINT). He trains counselors, social workers, and whole agency teams to use MI with confidence.

The skills your team will practice

MI rests on four core skills known as OARS. Together, they help people hear their own reasons for change, and help counselors respond well when people push back.

OOpen questionsInvite the person’s story instead of yes-or-no answers.
AAffirmationsName real strengths and efforts to build confidence.
RReflectionsSimple and complex reflections that show you understand.
SSummariesGather change talk together so the person can hear it.

Question 4 of 12
Complex reflectionsBest response
Client says

“Everyone keeps telling me what to do. I’m an adult.”

Which is the best complex reflection?
AYou want to make your own choices about your life.
BThey’re just trying to help.
CEveryone tells you what to do.
Correct. It reflects the value underneath, autonomy. Reflecting that need usually reduces discord.

Training that changes practice

Too many trainings are a box to check for CEUs. Ted builds his around the skills your staff will actually use with clients.

Practice, not just slides

Ted mixes short teaching with real plays, small groups, and feedback, so people try the skills in the room.

Grounded in the field

Ted has 25 years as a licensed mental health and addiction counselor, plus years of clinical supervision. The examples come from real sessions.

Fun and engaging

People learn more when they’re relaxed and involved. Teams leave energized and ready to try MI with their clients.
